Home security is extremely important to me, and while I’ve yet to invest in any previous Ring devices, I have been eyeing them for quite a while. With the recent reveal of the Floodlight Cam Wired Pro, I think I’m finally ready to pull the trigger. On top of that, the features the Floodlight Cam Wired Pro offers are exceptional, and give me tons of new ways to keep an eye on everything happening around my home.
Improving Itself
Ring has built quite an offering of home security options, including the original Floodlight Cam. The new Floodlight Cam Wired Pro, though, looks to up the ante by improving upon its original design. The device still includes that signature two-way communication that has made the Ring doorbells—and others like it—so successful. Talking with the mailman to help him find the perfect spot for that expensive package you ordered is as easy as opening the app and pressing a button. If you see someone sneaking around, you can always turn on the microphone and give them a start. If talking doesn’t do the job, there’s also the built-in siren, which emits a 110db sound that’s sure to get the attention of all the neighbors and send those pesky intruders running for the street. Of course, there’s always the built-in motion detection feature, which you even can fine-tune with motion zones to help cut down on false activations caused by the squirrels that like to run along the fence line at the back of the yard. The one big negative—like most of these outdoor floodlight cameras—is that the Floodlight Cam Wired Pro needs to be connected to the main power system in your house, so you’re going to need someone who knows what they’re doing to install it. You also need a good Wi-Fi connection, but as long as it’s relatively close to the router, you should be fine. Negatives aside, though, the suite of features offered by the Ring Floodlight Cam Wired Pro feels worth the $250 it costs to pick one up.
Eagle Eyes
The Floodlight Cam Wired Pro includes many of the same features that the previous Floodlight Cam had, but there are at least two significant standout additions: Bird’s Eye View and 3D Motion Detection. These two features make the Floodlight Cam Wired Pro a shining example of home security. With 3D Motion Detection, the new floodlight cam can pick up where motion is happening—whether it’s on the ground or in the air. This can be used with the motion zones I mentioned earlier to fine-tune where you want it to search for motion that will cause it to activate. You can customize this in a 30-foot area around the camera. Bird’s Eye View takes things a step further, though, offering a way to track where motion was detected in a top-down view. This lets you clearly see where people might have walked when they activated the floodlight cam, which could be key to making sure nothing around your yard was disturbed.
Always Connected
Perhaps one of the most appealing things about Ring’s security systems, though, is the connectedness of it all. As the world evolves more to the internet-of-things technology experts have been discussing for years, being connected is extremely important. Ring makes that easy with its app and subscription plan. Sure, the idea of paying to record footage from your security camera might seem silly, but if it saves me the hassle of setting up my own recording system, I’m all for it. The appeal of being able to photograph or record images of any intruders is extremely appealing. Now that Ring has topped off the package with dual-band Wi-Fi support and includes the new detection systems, I can’t wait to get my hands on the Floodlight Cam Wired Pro and see how it really stacks up against the other options out there.
